Daphne Groeneveld by Hedi Slimane for Vogue Russia

People fall to their knees in praise of Hedi Slimane, and the raw energy of his prolific work.  And as newly appointed Creative Director of YSL, one can only hope there will be more to worship.  Joining a brand with such a “cult-status” is a genius combination, and one that’s not without precedence (he was with the famous line in the late 90’s).  However, after leaving Dior Homme in 2007 Hedi Slimane focused his tremendous talents on the avant-garde world of fashion-photography, where he has garnered his own epic “cult-following,” making the future possibilities of this collaboration truly mind-blowing.  Anyone with a fashion-pulse holds a soft spot for YSL, and is continually inspired by the brand’s contribution to the decade of decadence – the 1970’s. There is not one among us who hasn’t fantasized about going to Studio 54 in it’s “Haute-Heyday,” dripping in a white silk YSL jump-suit, with a plunging neck-line and sky-high stacked wedges.  Having that collective reference point is a kind of  right of passage for those obsessed with the Art of Fashion.  All of the “style-stars” aligned back then, providing us with endless images of unforgettable moments in fashion-history. Moments that would stand the test of time, and go on to live in infamy.  1970’s YSL isn’t just a memory, it is the foundation for many a modern collection, and many modern reinventions.  I can’t think of any past line that is more relevant today, and I can’t imagine anyone more capable of bringing the House of YSL back to it’s former Glory than Hedi Slimane.
