i-D Magazine’ “Royalty Issue” Brings Out the Cover-Queens

The greatly anticipated Spring Issue of i-D Magazine has arrived, featuring 9 fabulously diverse covers. Having been anointed “The Royalty Issue,” these stunning images take an avant-garde approach to the idea of being regal.  With the genius team of Daniele & Iango photographing Shalom Harlow, Carolyn Murphy, Hahn Bin, Sui He and Guinevere Van Seenus – it’s no wonder that each fashion-story has a unique feel, while maintaining a sense of continuity.  These stunning shots are all wildly different, but seem oddly connected. And while the other four are slightly less dramatic, they still fit seamlessly together.  Walter Pfeiffer captured the beautiful Georgia May Jagger, Richard Bush shot Daphne Groenveld’s, Juergen Teller did Vivienne Westwood and “King” Karl Lagerfeld was his own master-photographer.  Each cover-model was asked, “what would you do if you were queen for a day?” And in my opinion, the answers were more telling than any interview.  While there were a couple of altruistic answers, about saving mankind & enforcing kindness, the others seemed a little more “self-focused.”  With ideas like throwing parties & playing with the crown-jewels – or in the case of Karl Lagerfeld & Hahn Bin – there was no need to imagine – they are already “queens everyday,” there was a distinct lack of depth.  However, before you judge, it  might be worth asking yourself what you would do, you might be surprised at the answer.  For information on the Spring 2012 Issue go to i-D online.com.
