FASHIONISTA DEFINED

Alright ladies let’s face it not all fashionista’s are created equal.  First it may benefit us to really explore the term “fashionista”.  It has been formally adopted by both pop-culture and the fashion industry and generally understood to mean someone that is not only interested and influenced by fashion, but much of their lives tend to revolve around the obsession and/or consumption of newer and more product.  A fashionista can definitely be made – think of all those make-over’s that lead to the unintentional creating of a” fashion monster” – but more often a true fashionista is born.

I’m sure my little 2yr old eyes dilated at the right shade of pink for my ballerina tutu.  And by 13 I was battling adolescence and spent a great deal of time pouring over Vogue, Elle, Glamour ect., diligently ripping out pages of high-style images to add to my “fashion wall” (A shrine built by every typical fashionista – a sort of alter to pray at).  These shrines came in all shapes and sizes but usually held space for iconic models, amazing designer couture, trendy fashions and hot hot hot men!!!!

A Wall of Fashion is a right-of- passage for any true budding fashionista.  You know who you are you beautiful little junkies – reading this while hundreds of images of fashion collages flood your memory.   Because at the heart of any true fashionista is an ARTIST.  A normal person’s relationship with a magazine falls under the category of take it or leave it – something that comes in handy at the doctor’s office or in line at the grocery store.  But for a fashionista…… they are so much more!

Fashion magazines are the places where many little girls’ fantasies lived.  And as adults those magazines are not merely colorful distractions for the black and white reality of a sometimes grey world – but to us they are glossy beacons of hope.

When a fashionista opens a shiny new magazine it’s like it’s the very first time.  The excitement is palpable, sustained by the ever-present anticipation of what might exist in those pages.  It’s the enticement of possibility.

And that’s what separates a true fashionista from the rest of the population.  We never stop believing that the most amazing thing we have ever seen awaits ua with each new month.  An innate passion, a true fashionista is not driven purely by lust to consume – but motivated by the desire to experience.
