Pregnant Celebs Baring the Belly

Mariah Carey posing nude on the current cover of Life&Style Magazine 8 months pregnant, joins the ranks of many A-list Celebrities who have chosen to go the way of Demi.  In 1991 Demi Moore posed nude on the cover of Vanity Fair Magazine 9 months pregnant.  A picture that would insight controversy for years to come and ultimately go down in infamy as 1 of the single most potent images in modern times. 

What people never seem to grasp is that capturing true magic means you have managed to catch something special, somewhere special at a special moment in time.  So while many have tried and failed to pay tribute to the famous photo – most have just come off looking desperate and awkward.  Of course there have been some exceptions.  Britney Spear’s 2006 cover of Bazaar magazine was not only stunning, but I loved that she went dark for the layout, letting us know she was in on it.

Paying homage to Demi with her dark sultry locks, made Britney’s image look high-style and editorial.  To this day I still think the most stunning image I have ever seen of a pregnant celebrity was in that 2006 Bazaar spread – with Briney laying down wrapped in a sheep-skin coat (below).  If you’re going to be shocking go avant-garde and give us great art.  Otherwise save the images for your private collection – the truth is we don’t need to see every famous pregnant person nude.

Having said that, I do think that Mariah looks beautiful and very happy, which lends itself to a gorgeous, glowing image.  However, the first thing I caught myself thinking after my mental well wishes was, Why did you need to do that?  I know every Star that makes this choice gives the same response, “I want to celebrate how beautiful pregnancy is” or “I want to remember this time”.  Both reasonable if not somewhat narcissistic reasons.  But I just can’t shake the big flashing question, Why can’t you just do them for yourself?  Since when does naked pregnant bodies need to be promoted?

Anyone who reads this blog knows that I’m not afraid of artistic expression – it’s half the reason I started fashionCOW.com  So if you want to pose nude right up ’til they wheel you into delivery…Go 4 it.  That’s your prerogative – Mine is to question what I think of it.
