Michelle Williams “Covers” Marilyn Monroe for GQ Magazine

Well it goes without saying that this recent Golden-Globe winning actress looks absolutely stunning on the Cover of  GQ Magazine’s February Issue.  However, I find myself less than enchanted by this (second-time-’round) take on the legendary icon.  Having already “Covered” that for her Vogue pictorial with Annie Liebovitz last year, I’d say there’s a hint of desperate and sad by giving us a premature encore.  And if she was going to hold-on to this character for one more layout, it needed to be an edgy/fresh version – something we haven’t seen.  This just looks like a sad Michelle portraying a sad Marilyn, ultimately an indulgent move that is in no way a service to the late icon’s memory.  And while GQ’s interview is a very poignant look into the personal history/heart-ache of this accomplished young actress, there’s something off-putting about the imbalance of if all.  The biggest tragedy for me is that the stunning work of Michael Thompson is somewhat wasted on a stale concept.  This prolific fashion-photographer is known for capturing his “subjects” in a way that allows the viewer to be carried-away by his ability to transport and transform.
