Using the power of performance art, Dana Taylor stages a high fashion sit-in in ‘Olga’ by Sebastian Mader for Vogue Russia, June 2013 – The Art Issue. Executing the artistry of opposites, this edgy editorial dares to redefine the narrative structure, in this Dada inspired series that calls for the non-violent promotion of community protest. Making his way to the suburbs, Mader breaks the high/low cultural divide by giving us a distinctly different view of haute couture. An appropriation of the avant-garde, (stylist) Natasha Royt and (makeup artist) Francelle Daly, unites the elements of extremes in this unique effort to bridge the gap between two worlds. By following the philosophy of Nouveau-Réalisme, this collaborative style sees the commonality of all things, not in spite of their differences but because of them. A contrast of high creation, by forcing together societies opposing realities we work toward the greater concept of “collective singularity.” An inspired piece of modern activism, in this stylish spectacle I see portrayed a passion for change. By transforming this cozy neighborhood nook into a residential runway we are reminded that we all must use the mouth-pieces at our disposal to make our voices heard.
