Karlie Kloss is in top form in ‘Destination Detox’ by Mario Testino for the July 2013 issue of Vogue US. Tucked away in the historic region of Carinthia Austria, Testino takes us on a trip to the Viva Mayr Clinic, a place for the upwardly mobile to find their fountain of youth. Performing radical rituals of purification, people from all over the world come to learn the fine art of discipline and denial. Giving her body over to science, Kloss is prodded, probed, pinned and pricked all in the pursuit of perfection. Her other-worldly form giving future generations something to aspire too, as we watch her move from one (torture) chamber to the next, we see that the clinical/cynical world of high-tech beauty leaves much to be desired. And with the awe-inspiring beauty of mother nature hitting us like some kind of slap the face, we are reminded that real perfection already exists. By witness these two world extremes rubbing up against each other it’s impossible not to appreciate the opposing forces that exist between them. So while I’m all for holding off the effects of aging as long as possible, I’m not sure I want to spend my life chasing what I can already enjoy for free.
