Mert & Marcus capture the colors of existence through art of exuberance in “Youth” for Vogue Italia, October 2015. A calvacation of creation unleashes as we embark on a journey of discovery. Nothing is what it seems and nothing stays where it should, in this shape shifting story that redefines the limits of design. The complexity of our culture takes hold as the couture revelation unfolds. Fashion isn’t worn for utilitarian purposes, rather it’s displayed in an effort to seek change. The art of modernity explodes as the majesty of material falls around the body. Stylists, Katy England, Max Pearmain, Marie Chaix, Semra Russell & Panos Yiapanis fill the page with decadence as the body canvas spreads its wings. Layers will thrill and excite with edgy connections that are sure to incite. Daringly disjointed yet oddly connected, one-of-a-kind pieces merge with an eclectic blend of innovative ideas. From a coat filled with graffiti to an over-sized corseted jacket, symbols erupt leaving yellow fur lying face down on top of a bed. Abstract imagery invites us to explore with Cayley King holding a tiny house in pink chiffon. Skin types converge as (Makeup Artists) Lisa Eldridge, Yadim & Lucia Pieroni share their talents in this trifecta of perfection. Yadim breaks forth with burgeoning beauty, as Stella Lucia floats in a sea of neutrality, with only the shocking shade of red lips seen. While Isis Bataglia brings a dream with skin that’s kept stealthily simple. Lisa Eldridge embraces the duality of features with magical makeup done on Cayley King. Jamilla Hoogenboom screams to be seen with baby blue eyes that spread over the entire lid, as Lucia Pieroni brings the wings with liner that flies out the sides. Pieroni shows one of the most exquisite shots in the series, with a naked faced Ruth Bell hiding behind flowers, her cheeks pinked with an impassioned glow. Unique faces form a universe of unity, from bright lips floating in water to a swirl of yellow/blue shadow encircling the eyes. Hairstylist, Akki, highlights exciting coiffure by showcasing King’s half-shaved head with poignant precision. While Paul Hanlon gives Jamilla’s dark dew a 70’s twist, by riding the stark bangs straight across the brows. From short to long, each shot uses the hair as an extension of personality rather than an accessory of looks. These are a group of youth for whom inspiration is a must. They aren’t conformist and they aren’t anarchist, they are individualist. Never before have we been so close to experiencing a revolution of the mind. Here we stand unified yet distinct, armed with the knowledge that to fly high we must be willing to fall hard. That is the difference with this generation. No posers here, I get the sense we are on the cusp of something great. From front to back – this entire issue was captured by the awe-inspiring, Mert & Marcus.
