Wylie Hays engages in a little double-edged beauty duty in ‘Grunge Lane’ by Fernando Gomez for Elle Indonesia. Masterful manipulation unfolds as we behold the theatre of cosmetic creation. Ruben Marmol breaks the confounds of conceptuality with mesmerizing makeup that transforms. Modernity comes forth with facial embellishments that are made for the stage. Masked in mayhem marked for must, drama is induced with dark noir that delights our senses. I see no evil that stands before me as my sight is altered under a fetish, fish-net hood. The theater of the face takes shape with a black line carefully drawn down the center of the brows. Sky blue-green eyes burst through the head-wrap, as a dueling iris invites us inside. From clean to supreme, shadow sits alone, as shots go from nude-aloof to naked with a twist. A thin wing flies out the side of the eyes as a thick, smokey line encircles the lid. Passion is captured in blown-out purple, as a masque of mayhem is worn in fits of glamour. The final act comes on with a bang, by letting a faux-face be etched in edgy interpretation. In one of the most exciting revelations of the season, Marmol transforms the skin of the face to a page of a pallet. Bold tones look so right that we forget we’re looking at an image of a stocking. Cobalt blue screams to be seen as over-sized lids are closed, letting lashes be drawn directly onto the cheeks. Red lips go way outside the lines, as the mouth is measured in twisted symmetry. Crystals crash in chaos, marching in a path of pretty up the side of forehead. Hays holds her head up high with gems that are secured over a glittered surrounding. Like a diva of the avian world, this pretty-bird preens in the proud pageantry of a peacock… behind the walls of tyranny justice avails, beyond the land of hope truth prevails.
