Kendall Jenner falls into the rabbit hole in “wonder.land” by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott for Vogue US, 12/15. Marking the 150 anniversary of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, this celebrates the London’s National Theatre’s musical adaptation of wonder.land (wonder-dot-land), by Rufus Norris. A modern day depiction of Alice, in this version she takes on an “avatar” in an online game called wonder.land. Stylist, Grace Coddington, brings her expertise to the table in this much loved child’s play. High fashion and fantasy fuse with avant-garde sensibility applied to exquisite characters. The neon caterpillar appears with blue-balled friends, as Kendall stands near in a delicate Dior petticoat. Getting decadent with a Dodo she wears YSL, bouncing with a mouse she dons a hair raising frock by Alexander Wang. Sitting on the floor in floral attire, the tiny Tweedle boys (dee & dum), create quite a scene. Kicking sky high in scarlet she comes face-to-face with one wild white rabbit, as Proenza Schouler’s stacked ruffles tier over the top as a hounds tooth coat screams to be seen. Wearing a Marc Jacob lace gown we bare witness to the wonder, as we see how Kendall would appear through the looking-glass. Alice invites real edge, as (Makeup Artist) Lisa Eldridge delivers a new take on this captivating character. Modernity makes its mark with drama that dares to dream. Black encircle the lids with smoked-out shadow, as dark brows beguile by shaping the eyes with defining lines. Angelic beauty blends into the backdrop with alabaster skin that shines. Lips are flush with a cheeky blush, as ethereal light tempts the body with a tantalizing glow. The power of pretty is pronounced, as we follow this young girl into another world. Hairstylist, Shay Ashual, provides color change that helps transform this model into a thespian. Bleaching her hair doesn’t just bring blonde into the mix, it provides a magical quality that allows us to fall down our own rabbit hole. A tale of tiny people told, this story rejoices in the art of our youth. The wonderful cast of wonder.land appears throughout this piece, Costume Design; Katrina Lindsay & Set Design; Andrew Tomlinson.
