Kate Moss, Grace Coddington, Bella Hadid, Young Thug (et al) get up close and personal in dynamic captures done by Tyrone Lebon for Calvin Klein, FW 16.17. A gathering of the gifted… these talented people bring the real as they share snapshots of their private thoughts. Lebon assembles the anointed few, from cultural icons and actors, to athletes, musicians, artists, models, street performers and more. Passion erupts, giving us an engaging reflection of what truly moves them. Bella becomes a phenom of the future in one of the most compelling shoots of the season. Long known as a brand synonymous with sex, CK has expanded its reach, proving it possesses a poignant picture of life in motion. Baring her back to the camera, her Calvin’s are seen as second skin. Art echoes throughout the film as we feel the presence of the past projecting forward. Taking us back in time, this is the first girl who’s even come close to giving us the flavor of – The Great Kate. Honoring the era, her look pays homage to a specific time in history, while leaving room for the new. Kate Moss projected more than sexuality, it was in her silence that we felt an awakening of something special. Enter Bella, here we have a unique female that possess some of those same powers. Her ability to be overtly expressive while remaining covertly private, reminds me of early Kate. However, I resist wanting to anoint this as a passing of the torch, because in truth, there will never be anyone who can touch the original Kate/Calvin combo. The best we can hope for is someone to bring the momentum of early Moss, while still managing to make her own mark. She always gave the impression that her instinct laid somewhere on the outer bounds of propriety, a quality that worked in her favor. Bella is a beautiful girl whose instincts seem the same. And, while standing the test of time remains to be seen, this layout is an argument in her favor.
Grace Coddington shows us how it’s done, with imagery that makes us believe that she never lost her model moves. While some may say she was under the wing of Wintour – Anna that is – I maintain that Grace was a wild bird always flying free. Thought of as a fashion hero, “this is as woman who doesn’t simply reflect beauty she creates it”. Like many of us, I fell in love with her when at first I watched, The September Issue. Since that time she’s become known as one of the (2) most powerful women in the fashion industry. With fiery locks that light up the page, her free-spirit captures the forward motion of this industry. Never looking better, this youthful creature seems to understand the secrets to staying young. Artist, Cuba Tornado Scott, shows her spectacular side with a white line drawn directly under her brows and fanning out to the forehead. In one of the most compelling shots of the season, she sits (proudly) mounted on a horse, as energy emanates from inside. Fierce independence strikes a strong pose from incredible females to include; Zoë Kravitz, Aomi Muyock and Selah Marley. The idiom, “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” has never been so accurately portrayed, as Presley Gerber lets his lineage speak. Keepin’ it in the family, Presley’s features emanate straight from famous model mom, Cindy Crawford. Proving with his face and unique heritage he can basically do no wrong. The power of this piece is felt from the smooth, silky flavor of Frank Ocean to the playful banter of James Rodriguez. Young Thug gives one of the most poignant passages of series, expressing strongly that he believes, sometimes you have to Disobey… and Defy… so you can Let Live. Glitter falls like rain from the sky, as a tree of life is reflected in a blink of Mark MacEachen’s eye. This artistic exposé celebrates the act of communal expression, with a phenomenal group gathered to share intimate visions of themselves. Living inside the belly of the beast this is a tale of truth aggressively unleashed.
