Maggie Mauer bares out the beauty from beyond by Sølve Sundsbø for Beauty Papers #3, S/S 2017. Evocative imagery arouses within me a state of salvation, as skin reflects a resurgence, allowing the epidermis to evolve. A rebuilding of hope. I am but transformed… like a Caterpillar being borne each picture portrays the artful will of wonder. Laying across the ground Mauer mimics a Caterpillar casting off her shelled body… ready to fly. Even in her fragile state this beautiful creature finds the will to carry on. Makeup artist, Stéphane Marais, builds on the beauty of now by taking a peak into the future.
Her face is caked with black appearing like dirt smudged around the skin, as gold-leafed tinfoil wraps around the front of the forehead and up into the hair. A black masque takes form as an auric hue lights up the lids, leaving behind a gilded reflection. Her steely eyes draw us inside while white paint covers her face/hands. Spinning into infinite, colors are caste above and below, circling the orbital surround. Gold lines Maggie’s eyes, as a cacophony of colors strike, with wings that fly out the sides. Marais draws a dark line over the top creating a faux brow that gives a spectacular presentation. The theater of beauty commences as the final presentation is made. White provides a palate of protection, as blue encircles the eyes while red surrounds the mouth. Working in harmony, this trio transforms, striking a blow for artistic integrity. The Butterfly is Borne… As the bold quality of baron beauty is all but mastered. Standing amidst an artful revolution we can’t help but be moved at the sanctity by which Sundsbø offers his work.
Nick Royal opts for dark, with her fashion choice being a solid, black fur. Mauer’s nude body reflects the synergism that plays in stunning contrast to the skin, as a gelatin base is placed over her face and body. Chloe Frieda tops things off with a velveteen hat that looks like it was taken off the head of a nymph. Building accents, she uses medical wraps around the head as avant-garde accouterments. A smokey tone is smeared around the frame of her features, marking them dark. As the skin reflects the resurgence of hope allowing the epidermis to evolve. Captivating in her current form we can only imagine what’s to come, sitting in artful acquiescence the result is one of stunning aplomb.
‘Circling, spinning and twisting all around exploding like a merry go ’round – teetering, tottering all the days long we search for a tale like lyrics to a song. A line it doth capture the feeling of amour, as love it does enter as we open up the door. This story in an interesting quest. A quest I choose to take. A burden I dare to make. Borne to the breast of beauty… art succumbs as the top is begone. Beauty a word that carries such complicated baggage. Burying tradition, we vary outside the norm to visit a world unknown. A critical calculation an artful revelation, a thoughtful journey to the other side.’ poetic prose – tanyajo
