Alasdair McLellan delves in deep to this three part series for Love Magazine, SS 2017. Here we have a strange and wonderful mix of models & actresses, as this collection of characters come together to form a fusion of fabulous. Katie Grand is a costumier of high end wares, as she uses fashion as a form of storytelling. Clothing has a unique intent, with styles that speak to the specificity of the moment. Each picture compels us forth with this fairy-tale of eclectic wares, while each piece particular falls into a fait accompli of couture. Lauren Hutton gives this story Balls. I know, I know that’s a bit crass – but I gotta call it like I see it. She is truly the definition of ageless. This is not merely about her appearing younger than her age, it’s the dynamism of her character. Set against a wide array of talented females, this woman just stands out. Every capture is more captivating than the last, as she morphs before our eyes. Appearing like a mix between a modern day Mary Poppins and a mystical Nanny McPhee. Not concerned with being perfect she would rather use her precious time to explore.
In one of the coolest shots of the story, she stands in a two piece silk pajama piece with a wrap around scarf made out of material from her friends graphic ensemble. A partner in crime, she calls on her good friend Jaime King to join her in jubilee. Hutton oozes venerable appeal, as she stands with a black bowler hat while her friend mimics her in a floppy vintage version. Shot in black/white these are definitely stand outs. The one thing we get from Hutton is her go forth and conquer mentality. No need for speed, her intention is ripe with intellectual savvy. This is a conceptual take on art of eloquence. That’s to say, The quiet pondering of a rich mind is a force to be reckoned with. Here we see a woman rich with dignity while wealthy with honor. This theatrical layout is deep with dramatic detailing and heavy with thespian influence. Grace Cheng gets her grass on wearing black pants with a floral motif and rainbow colored creepers. While, Lululeika Ravn Liep luxuriates over the lawn in nothing but a simple bra. Ellen Rosa revels in the radiance of being bridal, as a veil drapes down her back. Energy ignites as she sits outside the same white, picket house wearing a 60’s inspired patterned dress and platformed boots. The power of this piece is seen in the poetry of the people. Keeping that same sense of spirit, King luxuriates over a simple foldout chair as she lets the sun sink in. Irina Shayk gets her groove on as she kneels down into a plastic pool with water floating up around her. Donning a big, blonde wig she prances in a pristine, white dress with flowers to match. Her passion is felt in each page as she makes her way through in a riotous rage. Sexy with a hit of strange, she shows up in a variety of playful places. First we find her giving us a full face shot only to appear in front of a clear picture of Jamie, as she slowly melts away. And finally, we witness her sitting is quiet reflection as glass is shattered all around her.
Cara Taylor leads this pack of misfit models to a place of utter enchantment. Standing high in the sun filled sky we see Cara’s face done in a decadent surprise. Wearing a backless dress with playful pin-curls, she looks like an innocent girl. Her eyes surprise as she turns around to show, that Mark Carrasquillo has delivered brows that beguile the senses. So compelling is this unique combination we find ourselves lost in the music of the makeup. Each feature plays like a piece of concerto, designed to deliver quite a punch. Mark keeps the eyes clean, giving the area a moment to shine. The look draws you inside with a high, thin line that arcs over the original brows. Bringing forward theatrical beauty, her natural brows have been bleached to oblivion leaving behind a bold new look. Then appearing on the other end of the spectrum we have Kendall Jenner. An interesting addition to this group. She’s got on a heavy mask of makeup mixed with skimpy styles; to include red panties, with black strings hanging off the front. Langley Fox is a standout surprise with pictures that illuminate that era. Wearing a daring array of wide leg pants and button down shirts the ensemble is rich with history and steeped in sentimentality. Syd Hayes celebrates the art of coiffure, as Olesya goes from a bump heard ’round the world to a tower of cascading curls. Syd delivers a divine take on this 40’s inspired statement, with wide pin curls set to distinguish the time period.
Most of these images feel like they’re are searching for something deeper, something that lives outside the relative gates of the gorgeous. Searching to find the future, this story celebrates the faces of the modern female. Case in point we have only 1 image of Lara Stone. So strong is her energy that single image is all we can take. As we weave through this tale like a piece of yarn put to task, we are at once surprised by the uniqueness of the characters. Caught between breath and airless wonder we feel our life leap ahead. An unbearable lightness of being overtakes us as we crawl inside the storm-drain of life.
